'Focus-By-Wire' lenses (such as Canon's STM or Nikon's AF-P) need power to engage the manual focus rings on the lens, since manual lens mount adapters do not power the lens, those lenses can focus. Set your exposure manually or with the meter using your camera's aperture priority mode (stop-down). If your lens does not have a manual aperture setting ring, the lens aperture returns to the default position, which is stopped to the largest f-stop or opened to the smallest f-stop depending on the lens.
