Capture Stunning Action Footage on Your Winter Sports Holiday

Heading out on a winter sports trip soon and want to capture it all? We’ve gathered the best tips to help you get the most out of your camera or action cam. This way, you’ll return home with spectacular action shots and can relive your winter adventure anytime you want.

Tip 1: Try Filming in Slow Motion

Many action cameras now offer 4K resolution. This delivers sharp footage, but most people still don’t watch videos in 4K. That’s why using a high frame rate when filming action can be very worthwhile. Some action cams can record at 120 or even 240 frames per second, allowing you to create gorgeous slow-motion clips that make your video even more impressive. Keep in mind that high frame rates usually reduce resolution. We recommend sticking to at least 1080p or 720p.

Tip 2: Use a Gimbal

Filming during winter sports can easily result in shaky footage because of all the movement. Luckily, you can prevent this with a gimbal. A gimbal keeps your camera stable, producing smooth video without unwanted sudden movements. If you use a gimbal, don’t forget to turn off your camera’s internal stabilization for the best result. The latest GoPro and DJI models no longer require a gimbal at all—their built-in stabilization is so good that an external gimbal becomes unnecessary.

Tip 3: Choose the Right Camera

Winter conditions can be tough on your gear. Not all cameras are built to withstand temperature changes, moisture, and impacts. Fortunately, there are several models that are perfect for these conditions! Think of rugged cameras like the Olympus Tough, the Nikon Coolpix, or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300. These cameras are extremely durable and shock-resistant. They are also freeze-proof and waterproof, making them ideal for winter sports. This way, you can focus on capturing great shots in the snow without worrying about your equipment.

Tip 4: Bring a Backpack

In the middle of the action, you want to move freely while still carrying your gear safely. A compact backpack is your best option. For optimal protection, choose one with padded dividers so your equipment doesn’t slide around as you race down the slopes. And if you fall, your gear stays protected.

Tip 5: Change Your Perspective

To create varied and exciting footage, try playing with different perspectives. Your shooting angle and focal length can make a huge difference. You might mount your camera on your helmet or chest harness, for example. The real adventurers can even attach their camera to their snowboard—this creates spectacular shots, though it does come with some risks.

Tip 6: Make a Short Video

You’ve probably seen those awesome winter sports compilations on YouTube. Now you can create your own using all the footage you shot. At home, gather your highlights and edit them into a short video. To edit your footage, you can use software like Adobe Premiere Elements. This editing program makes it easy to turn your clips into impressive creations that will steal the show.
