Capturing the perfect action or sports shot isn’t easy. Still, you probably want to photograph your child, partner or favourite sports team as well as possible. Even if you don’t have professional equipment, you can still get very far. We’ve listed a number of useful tips and tricks for taking spectacular sports and action photos. So if you want to take better pictures from the sidelines or inside the sports hall, read on.
Taking a good sports or action photo starts with using the right camera and settings. It’s important to choose a camera that can handle high ISO values. This is especially crucial when capturing indoor sports or evening matches. It helps you avoid noise or blur in your images. You can also opt for an action camera, which lets you capture all the action on the field up close and in great detail.
Especially at sporting events with many spectators, it can be quite a challenge to find a good spot. And while having little equipment with you is usually an advantage, in this case it can also work against you. However, you can also see this as a challenge: look for that one spot where you can capture the sport in the best possible way. Even if that means shooting from above or very close to the ground.
Keep in mind that not every memory card is suitable for taking many photos in quick succession, something that is very common in sports photography. If you don’t choose the right memory card, you might miss the perfect moment because your camera is still writing images. That would be a shame, of course. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to write speed. How fast it needs to be depends on your camera.
When taking sports and action photos, you can work with both fast and slow shutter speeds. For example, you can freeze motion by using a fast shutter speed. You can also choose to show the speed of an athlete or vehicle in your image. You do this by using a slower shutter speed and panning along with your subject. This keeps the subject sharp while the background becomes blurred.
Familiarise yourself with the sport you want to capture. Make sure you understand the rules and pay close attention to the athletes’ behaviour so you can anticipate their actions. If you already have an idea of who to follow and what they are likely to do, you can keep your camera ready and even pre-visualise the right composition. If something special happens, all you have to do is press the shutter.
A close-up of an athlete is of course beautiful, but sometimes the background can be a valuable addition to your photo. For example, include the crowd in the background to capture the atmosphere of the match. Are you in a less visually appealing location but still want a nice background? Then choose a shallow depth of field so the background becomes blurred and less distracting.
In addition to speed and capturing action shots, emotion also plays an important role in sports photography. The euphoria after a victory, but also disappointment or pain, is part of an athlete’s life. Emotion is universal—everyone recognises a cheering winner or supporter, the focused gaze of an athlete in peak concentration, or the downcast posture of a loser. These intense emotions can produce powerful images.
Practice makes perfect. It’s mainly a matter of trying things out yourself and continuing to do so. If you want to take a more professional approach, you can always turn to an expert. You can attend a workshop or lecture to quickly gain new knowledge.
